Kurly Inc, an operator of the online grocery platform Market Kurly, plans to unveil its own payment system Kurly Pay in the second half of this year.South Korean tech giant Kakao Corp’s online payment unit Kakao Pay is currently in the process of signing a reconsignment contract for Kurly’s payment services, according to industry sources on Tuesday.
With the launch of Kurly Pay later this year, payments using Kakao Pay will be made through an integrated payment system. Toss Pay, Chai Pay will also provide payment services to Kurly Pay through reconsignment. Customers will be able to earn reward points and additional benefits by using Kurly Pay.
This will make the grocery delivery startup to simplify its settlement system and reduce commission fees. So far, the company had to go through a complicated settlement process as payments have been made through multiple payment gateway companies including Kakao Pay and Toss Pay. Each payment gateway company has different settlement policies and methods. Kurly will also be able to respond more quickly to orders and payment-related requests from customers.
Kurly plans to boost its corporate value through Kurly Pay ahead of its planned listing this year. The company submitted its application for the preliminary review in March.
Kurly acquired local online payments service provider Paybot in September 2021 and renamed it to Kurly Pay. The company added the electronic financial business, membership service business, and personal credit information management business as new business purposes in its business registration while removing its previous business purpose of electronic payment agency business.
Kurly also will expand its distinguished curating service into an open market platform to offer more variety of choices for its new and existing customers. It will launch its open market service in the second half once it completes the creation of its own online payment system. (Reporting by Nu-ri Moon)
